Upholstery Cleaning in Ilford (IG)
Sofas take a beating: crumbs down the sides, a grey shadow on the headrest, the dog’s favourite corner and that spill nobody owned up to. Our upholstery cleaning in Ilford lifts everyday grime from sofas, armchairs, dining chairs and headboards. We choose the method for each fabric, so you don’t get one machine used on everything. We clean for homes, rented properties and businesses across IG.
Send us a few photos and the care label, or give us a call. We’ll come back with a free, no-obligation quote.
What a proper sofa clean involves
A good upholstery clean starts with a vacuum, not a spray. Grit and hair in the fabric turn to mud the moment they get wet. That’s why a careful vacuum makes such a difference to the result.
What’s included as standard
- A thorough dry vacuum with upholstery tools. We get down the sides, under the seat cushions and along the piping and seams, where crumbs, sand and pet hair collect.
- A care label and fabric check before any product touches the piece.
- A colourfastness test on a hidden spot, such as the back of a skirt or under a cushion.
- Pre-treatment of high-contact areas, such as arms, headrests and seat fronts. These pick up body oils and hair products.
- Cleaning by hot water extraction or a low-moisture method, depending on the fabric and what it will safely take.
- Agreed spot treatment on marks you’ve pointed out.
- Grooming the pile so it dries evenly and doesn’t leave patchy shading.
- A final check against the agreed list, plus drying advice before we leave.
Pieces we’re regularly asked to clean
- Two- and three-seater sofas, corner sofas and sofa beds
- Armchairs, recliners and nursing chairs
- Dining chairs with fabric seats or backs
- Ottomans, footstools and storage benches
- Fabric headboards and divan bases
- Scatter cushions and seat cushions
- Office chairs, reception seating and café banquettes
Booking carpets as well? It usually makes sense to do them on the same visit as our carpet cleaning, so the room only has to dry once. Mattresses are a separate job with their own method. Our mattress cleaning page explains what’s involved.
Delicate fabrics, leather and stubborn stains
Fabrics that need a careful hand
Some fabrics react badly to water or the wrong product.
- Viscose can brown or go stiff if it’s over-wetted.
- Cotton and linen can shrink or leave tide marks.
- Velvet and chenille can crush if they’re brushed against the pile.
- Silk blends may be unsuitable for wet cleaning altogether.
Many care labels carry a cleaning code:
- W means water-based cleaning is fine.
- S means solvent only.
- WS means either can be used.
- X means vacuum only.
We’ll tell you honestly if a piece shouldn’t be wet-cleaned. We won’t take the risk and hope for the best.
Leather and faux leather
We clean leather with products made for it and then condition it. It never goes under an extraction machine. Unprotected aniline leather absorbs liquid and darkens easily, so we test first. If the finish is cracked, peeling or worn through, cleaning won’t restore it.
Stain and odour removal
Tell us what the stain is, how old it is and what’s already been tried. Household sprays sometimes set a mark or leave a ring that’s harder to shift than the original spill. Many food, drink and grime marks lift well. Ink, hair dye, old red wine and anything heat-set may only fade, so we can’t promise complete removal. Bleach marks are lost colour, not stains, and cleaning can’t put colour back.
Pet hair and odour
Pet hair comes out with rubber tools and slow, careful vacuuming before any wet work. Odours on the fabric surface usually improve noticeably. The exception is urine that has soaked into the foam. It can keep smelling after the cover is clean, and sometimes replacing the cushion inner is the only real fix. We’ll say so if that’s likely.
When cleaning isn’t the answer
Some problems need a different trade or a decision about the furniture.
- Worn, frayed or sun-faded fabric, or sagging foam, needs an upholsterer.
- Mould from a damp room will come back unless the damp is dealt with first.
- Suspected bedbugs or fleas need pest control before any cleaning.
- Fire, smoke or flood damage should go through your insurer and a specialist restorer.
How booking an upholstery clean works
- Send us the details. Include photos of each piece, the care label, any stains you’d like treated and whether you have pets. A rough idea of size helps too.
- We agree the scope and quote. You’ll know which pieces we’re cleaning, the method for each, any extras and the price before we start.
- We arrange access. We’ll agree arrival time and key handling, and talk through parking. Some streets in Ilford need permits or have restricted bays, so let us know about visitor permits or the nearest legal spot.
- We clean. We bring our own machines, products and protective sheeting. Please tell us beforehand about allergies or preferred products. Eco-friendly options are available on request, checked against each fabric.
- We check and hand back. We go over the agreed list with you and explain drying. If something in scope has been missed, contact us promptly and we’ll arrange to put it right. We’ll confirm how that works when you book.
What we’d ask you to do: clear the space around the furniture and take off throws and loose cushions you don’t want cleaned. Keep pets in another room while we work. We’ll handle the rest, including moving cushions and protecting your floor.
Drying times and how to plan around them
Most fabric sofas cleaned by hot water extraction are dry to sit on within several hours. Low-moisture methods are often quicker. Thick seat cushions, cold damp days and closed-up rooms all slow things down. Some pieces can take until the next day.
To help it along:
- Open a window or two, or run a dehumidifier if you have one.
- Keep the heating on gently, but don’t push heaters right up against the fabric.
- Don’t sit on the piece, or put throws back on, until it’s fully dry.
- Leave the foil pads or blocks we put under wooden feet in place. They stop damp fabric marking your carpet.
- Don’t take zipped covers off and machine-wash them to “finish the job”. They often shrink and won’t go back on.
A morning booking usually means a usable sofa by evening. Avoid booking the day before guests arrive if you can.
What affects the price
Upholstery is quoted per job, not by the hour. The main factors are:
- How many pieces you have and their size. A corner sofa takes far longer than an armchair.
- The fabric and the method it needs.
- Condition, including heavy soiling, pet hair and odour.
- How many stains need treating.
- Leather, which needs cleaning and conditioning.
- Access, such as upper-floor flats without a lift or tight parking.
- Whether we’re combining it with carpets or other cleaning.

Upholstery cleaning for landlords, holiday lets and businesses in Ilford
Furnished lets. A clean sofa makes a real difference at check-in and check-out. We clean to whatever the inventory or agent has flagged. Worn fabric and permanent marks can’t be cleaned away, though, and no cleaner can guarantee a deposit outcome.
Short lets. Fabric dining chairs and sofas pick up marks quickly with frequent guests. We plan the timing so pieces are dry before the next arrival.
Offices, salons, clinics and cafés. We clean waiting room chairs, reception sofas and banquettes before opening or after closing where possible. Seating needs time to dry before it’s used again, so for larger rooms we may clean in batches. That way part of the room stays usable.
Why people book us for upholstery

Upholstery cleaning FAQs
Can you clean any sofa? Usually, yes, but not always with water. Fabrics marked S or X, some silks and some viscose need a different approach or vacuuming only. We’ll tell you before we start.
Will every stain come out? No. Most everyday marks improve a lot, but old, heat-set or dye-based stains may only fade. Tell us what caused the stain and we’ll give you a realistic view.
How long until I can use my sofa? Typically several hours, sometimes longer for thick cushions or on damp days. Good ventilation shortens it noticeably.
Do you remove pet hair and smells? Yes. We remove hair before wet cleaning, and surface odours usually improve well. Urine that has soaked deep into the foam may not fully clear without replacing the cushion inner.
Can I wash the cushion covers myself instead? We’d advise against it unless the label says the covers are washable. Many shrink or fade, and then they won’t match or fit the frame.
Do I need to be at home? Not necessarily. Plenty of customers in Ilford leave a key or arrange access. We’ll agree the arrangement in advance.
Can you do carpets on the same visit? Yes, if it’s agreed when you book. Doing both together means the room dries in one go.
