School Cleaning in Ilford (IG)
School cleaning in Ilford has to work around the timetable. Classrooms need to be ready before the first bell, toilets are under heavy use by lunchtime, and the hall might host PE in the morning and lunch at noon. We clean primary and secondary schools, nurseries and other education settings across IG. Our cleaners are vetted and insured, work to an agreed checklist, attend outside teaching hours where possible, and use products checked for each surface.
Call or email with your site size, rough layout and the hours you’d like covered, and we’ll arrange a walkthrough and a free, no-obligation quote.
What a routine school clean covers
Every school is different, so we build the checklist with your business manager or site team. Most contracts are built around these areas.
Classrooms and teaching spaces
- Desks and tables wiped, including the undersides where hands and chairs touch them
- Chairs, door handles, light switches and shared equipment trays cleaned
- Whiteboard ledges dusted and window sills cleared of dust
- Bins emptied and liners replaced, with recycling kept separate if you sort it
- Hard floors swept and mopped, and carpeted areas vacuumed, including reading corners and the crumbs under tables
- Sinks in art rooms and early years areas cleaned of paint and glue residue
We don’t move pupils’ work or rearrange displays. If a table is covered in a project in progress, we’ll clean around it and leave it as we found it.
Corridors, entrances and stairs
Corridors and entrances take the most foot traffic and show dirt first. We clean entrance matting, vacuum or mop corridors, and wipe stair handrails, push plates and door edges. We also clean the fingerprints off reception glass and entrance doors, which is the first thing visitors and parents see.
Washrooms and toilets
Washroom hygiene is usually the top priority. We clean toilets, urinals, cubicle partitions, basins, taps, mirrors and hand dryers. We descale where limescale builds up around taps and flush plates, and mop floors with attention to the area around the base of each toilet. If you supply consumables, we’ll refill soap, paper towels and toilet roll.
Separate colour-coded cloths and mops are used in washrooms. They never go near classrooms or kitchens.
Halls, dining areas and staff rooms
After lunch the hall usually needs tables wiped, chairs cleaned and dropped food cleared from the floor before it’s mopped. Staff rooms and staff kitchens get worktops, sinks, microwaves and fridge handles wiped. We’ll clean the fridge interior too if it’s on the agreed list and has been emptied.
Canteen and kitchen hygiene: who cleans what
In most schools the catering team cleans the food preparation areas as part of its own food safety routine. We agree the split in writing so nothing falls between the two teams. A common arrangement is:
- Catering team: food prep surfaces, cooking equipment, food storage
- Us: dining area floors, tables, servery fronts, walls, doors and the floors in kitchen areas once service has finished
We can quote separately for periodic deep work such as degreasing walls, cleaning behind equipment or cleaning the outside of extraction hoods. Ductwork cleaning is specialist work and sits outside our service. We also can’t take responsibility for your food hygiene rating, since that depends on the whole kitchen operation. We can make sure the cleaning we’re responsible for is done properly and recorded.
Term-time cleaning and holiday deep cleans
Term-time cleaning keeps the building running. Holidays are when the bigger jobs get done, because rooms are empty and floors have time to dry.
During half-terms and the summer break we can arrange:
- A deep clean of classrooms, including high-level dusting, skirting boards, radiators, and the insides of cupboards and drawers once they’ve been emptied
- Washroom deep cleaning, including descaling, grout scrubbing and cleaning the outside of pipework
- Carpet cleaning for classrooms, libraries and offices, timed so carpets have dried before staff return
- Internal glass, partitions and high-traffic doors
- Hall and gym floors cleaned using methods suited to the floor finish
Book holiday work early. The summer break is the busiest time for school deep cleans in Ilford, and dates depend on availability. Telling us about contractor visits, decorating or floor resealing helps us put the cleaning in the right order. Cleaning after painting makes more sense than cleaning before it.
Products that are safe to use around children
We bring our own supplies and equipment unless we’ve agreed otherwise. For schools, we choose products with the setting and the next use of each surface in mind:
- Products are used at the manufacturer’s stated dilution and contact time, not “a bit extra to be safe”
- Surfaces that pupils touch or eat from are rinsed or wiped where the product instructions say so
- Chemicals are stored securely and never left unattended in rooms children can reach
- We can share product information so your site team can keep its own records
- Eco-friendly options are available on request, and we’ll check they’re suitable for each surface
Tell us about known allergies, sensitive pupils, or products your school already uses or avoids. If you have a nursery or early years room, mention it. Very young children put their hands and toys in their mouths, which affects what we use on low surfaces and play equipment.
Risk assessments, access and safeguarding
School cleaning risk assessments are part of setting up the contract. We’ll go through the site with you and look at chemical use, wet floors, working at height, lone working and how we’ll move around the building. Our working arrangements are then agreed with your site manager.
On access and security, we’ll agree:
- Arrival and finish times, and which entrance cleaners use
- Key, fob or alarm code handling, and who to call if the alarm misbehaves
- Signing in and out, ID and visitor procedures
- Which rooms are off limits, such as server rooms or offices with pupil records
- How cleaners will work if any staff or pupils are still on site, such as after-school clubs or breakfast clubs
Every school has its own safeguarding requirements. Tell us yours during the walkthrough and we’ll confirm how our cleaners will work within them before we start.
We can follow your procedure for bodily fluid spills or sickness outbreaks, and we can discuss extra touchpoint cleaning during a bug going round. We won’t promise a sterile building or the removal of every germ, because no cleaning service honestly can.
What’s outside a standard contract
These are quoted separately or handled by other specialists:
- External windows and high-level work that needs access equipment
- Carpet extraction, floor stripping and resealing
- Graffiti removal from external walls
- Sanitary waste collection, which is normally handled by a licensed waste contractor
- Clearing up after building work, which needs a different approach from a routine clean
Some problems can’t be solved with cleaning. Mould that keeps coming back usually points to damp or ventilation issues. Suspected asbestos, damaged flooring or worn finishes need the right trade or a surveyor. We’ll tell you if we spot something like this during the walkthrough rather than charging you to clean around it.
How we set up school cleaning
- Enquiry. Tell us the type of setting, approximate size, number of washrooms and the hours you need covered.
- Walkthrough. We visit the site, ideally with your site manager, and look at floor types, access, storage for equipment and any problem areas.
- Checklist and quote. You get an agreed task list showing daily, weekly and periodic tasks, with the price agreed upfront.
- Access and start date. We confirm keys, alarms, sign-in arrangements and your safeguarding requirements.
- Cleaning and checks. Cleaners work through the agreed list, and each visit finishes with a check against it. If something in scope is missed, tell us promptly and we’ll arrange to put it right.
Your part is simple. Tell us about changes such as exam weeks, events in the hall or rooms out of use, so the plan keeps up with the school.
What affects the price
School cleaning is priced on the work involved, not a standard rate per building. The main factors are:
- Floor area and the number of classrooms, washrooms and halls
- How many visits a week, and how long each one takes
- The mix of hard floors and carpet
- Canteen and kitchen responsibilities
- Periodic and holiday deep cleaning on top of routine visits
- Access, time windows and any working-at-height requirements
Our pricing page explains how we build quotes. For a figure for your site, request a quote and we’ll arrange a walkthrough.
School cleaning FAQs
Do you clean during the school day?
Usually not. Most cleaning happens before school starts or after pupils leave. If you need daytime cover, such as a lunchtime washroom check, we can discuss what’s possible and how it fits your safeguarding arrangements.
Can you cover nurseries and early years settings?
Yes. We adjust products and methods for low surfaces, play equipment and nappy-changing areas, and we agree the checklist around the setting’s own hygiene routines.
Do you provide the cleaning products and equipment?
Yes, unless we’ve agreed otherwise. If your school prefers particular products or has a supplier contract, let us know and we’ll work with that where it’s suitable.
Can you do holiday deep cleans without a term-time contract?
Yes. We can quote one-off holiday work in Ilford and the wider IG area. Send us details or arrange a walkthrough, and book early for the summer break.
Will you clean the school kitchen?
Usually we clean dining areas and kitchen floors, while the catering team handles food preparation surfaces and equipment. We confirm the split in writing so both teams know who’s responsible for what.
Do you clean other education buildings?
Yes. The same approach works for colleges, training centres, tuition centres and similar settings across IG, with the checklist matched to the building.
What happens if a cleaner is off sick?
We’ll let you know and arrange cover where we can. We’ll agree the details, including how you’ll be told, when we set up the contract.
